Ontario’s Health Insurance Plan (O.H.I.P.) provides Ontario residents with very basic medical services and emergency health care, free-of-charge. As a resident of “the big city”, your Toronto health coverage automatically includes:
- Medically-essential services provided by a physician or performed in-hospital
- Medically necessary diagnostic services (e.g. x-rays, blood tests and other authorized lab procedures)
- Emergency dental and oral surgeries performed in-hospital
- Eye exams for those under 20 or over 64 years of age
- Some prescription medications for those over 64 years of age
Your Toronto health coverage probably does not include:
- Routine dental care or corrective dental treatment
- Prescription medications
- Vision care and prescription eyewear
- Registered specialists and therapists (like chiropractors, for example)
- Emergency medical care when travelling abroad
Benefits to fit big city living
Due to O.H.I.P.’s limited health provisions, a growing number of Torontonians are turning to health benefits providers for plans that supplement provincial coverage. SureHealth from GSC offers two health insurance products that effectively top up O.H.I.P. with valuable benefits. Each product offers a selection of supplemental health insurance plans to choose from (7 plans for ZONE, 4 for LINK).
